We’re often told about all of the benefits a detox will provide to us, why we should do them every now and then and how amazing we’ll feel afterwards. But no one seems to tell us what happens to us WHILE our body is in detox, what to expect and why it’s happening.
More often than not, I hear from people that they have stopped their very valuable detox because they think it’s making them unwell or somehow isn’t good for them!
So, what creates the need for a detox?
Today our day to day lives (daily stress, home and work pressures, environmental pollutants etc) along with our diets (the quality of our food and water) put our bodies under huge toxic stress, whether we are consciously aware of it or not. And for a lot of us, our body is struggling to fight the battle of keeping the toxic load under control. This is when it’s great to detox.
When we think detox, many of us only think about the liver. But our bodies are designed to detox via multiple pathways including through the kidneys, skin (our largest organ in the body), lymph, colon and lungs.
What’s the point of a detox?
The point of a detox is to help your vital systems and organs within your body to clear toxins from it, which helps to revitalise your whole system; providing greater levels of energy, vitality, and health.
When you are in need of a detox, your body may have low levels of vitamin C, zinc, and glutathione (an antioxidant, normally synthesised from the food we eat). Glutathione is required by all cells of the body and in high concentrations to protect us from oxidative stress and provide energy to our cells. Without this substance, the cells cannot protect themselves from inner and outer free radical damage. Without glutathione to protect cells from this damage, they die earlier than they should, placing more pressure on our systems overall.
Is your body detoxing right now?
Whether you’ve made changes to your food or beverages, changes in your environment, your exposure to toxins or other lifestyle changes our bodies can go through a period of detoxification. Detox symptoms can include:
- Flu-like symptoms
- Anxiety and/or emotions surfacing
- Lack of focus
- Digestive issues and/or nausea
- Any many more!
It’s good to know that these are temporary and although it takes a little more effort in the short term, it does get easier and you’ll love the increased energy and health you gain from your detox, whatever form that’s in.
Why do things get worse before they get better?
Detoxification is actually a process of metabolism, it’s purpose being to remove toxins from the body. And things are better out than in, right? So as the body begins to release toxins, we are often much more aware of the physical symptoms compared to when we absorb the toxins in the first place.
You may experience ‘old’ emotions or physical issues or ailments resurface. It’s important to recognise that your body is actually doing exactly what you asked it to do! To detox. The worst thing you can do is stop part way through which ceases the process of releasing your body is undertaking.
